Â
Let’s talk color denim today, shall we? The standard color of denim is blue, indigo, to be exact, which is the dye used for denim, initially taken from the indigofera tinctoria plant, whose inherent features are good color fastness to water and light, a continual fading and it’s inability to penetrate fibers completely, allowing the blue color in jeans to always look irregular and individual. Dark blue, light blue and all the blues in between. This fall, however, denim is done in just about every hue. But before we get into specific colors of the season, read up on how these finishes are achieved.
Â
Abrasion – Refers to the scraping or rubbing of the surface of the surface of a fabric giving it a worn or faded look, most often by use of pumice stones.Â
Acid Wash – Pumice stones are soaked in chlorine and then tumbled with jeans in a dryer. This process etches white highlights onto the jeans giving jeans sharply contrasting colors.Â
Aged – A kind of wet processing that gives the garment an artificial worn look and a softer feel through prolonged abrasion.Â
Antique – A denim finish achieved through sanding and washing, which gives an aged look to the garment. Antique is also a type of ring denim in which the yarn is strongly uneven.Â
Clean – Denim jeans that retain their indigo color even after repeated washings.Â
Creased –A finish that produces a white line down the front of the denim jeans, creating the illusion that the jeans have been repeatedly ironed.Â
Crushed – A textured effect achieved through a special fabric construction and wet processing. The denim jeans are woven with an overtwisted weft yarn; when the garment is washed, the yarn ‘shrinks,’ acquiring a look that is further enhanced by bleaching and stonewashing.Â
Destroyed – The shredding of jeans with knives and scissors.Â
Enzyme washed – Enzymes are proteins used to speed up the chemical processes and are used in the finishing of denim.Â
Frayed – A finish in which the waistband and hems of denim jeans have been sanded to create a worn effect.Â
Grinding – This treatment of denim creates an aged or worn look, especially on belt loops, seams, hems, pockets and waistbands.Â
Overdyed – A second dying process executed after denim jeans have been sewn, to make the thread color the same as the jean.Â
Pre-Shrunk – The denim has been pre-treated to ensure that the garment will shrink less than 3% in washing.Â
Raw –Denim jeans that have not been treated or finished.Â
Sandblasted –A laundry process in which denim jeans are shot with guns of sand in order to make the jeans look as if they’ve been worn.Â
Stonewashed – A type of wash in which denim jeans are abraded with stones.Â
Tinted – Denim jeans that have been dyed a second time, usually with a yellow khaki hue, to create the look of vintage denim.
